Paniya : Far From Pan India

A house in Paniya Hamlet, Wayanad-Kerala

Wayanad is a hill station in northern Kerala, that is home to several tribal tribes, including the Paniyas, Adiyas, and Kurumas. The Paniyas are one of the most populous tribal tribes in Wayanad. The Paniya tribe is also present in the Kerala districts of Kannur, Kozhikode, and Malappuram, as well as the bordering districts of Coorg in Karnataka and the Nilgiris in Tamil Nadu. The term Paniyan/Paniyar basically means "someone who performs physical work" or "labourer," and as the term indicates, the group historically served as agricultural labourers to local landlords.Despite the fact that they are far from preserving all of their ancient customs, there are a number of rituals and practises that persist to highlight the Paniya community's distinctiveness and require documenting as elements of historical value.
